Talk to someone. Tell them what you know about child prostitution, pornography and trafficking. This is the first step but in some ways the hardest one. Child abuse and exploitation exists in the shadows, out of the sight of good people who want to do away with it but who find it difficult to talk about. The only way to ensure we can stop it is by acknowledging the scope and impact of commercial sexual exploitation of children. Talking about it is the first step to ending it, as is getting hotels to sign the code of conduct so that they train their staff to recognize the problem. If you’re interested in ways to spread the word, click here.
Be a responsible traveler and let hotels know you care about the code of conduct.
Read an overview of the Wyden Bill and take action to help get it passed.
Buy a TassaTag, TassaTag stands for Travelers Take Action Against Sex Slavery and Trafficking. TassaTags are big, bright, hand made and fair trade luggage tags that help you spot your luggage more easily while reclaiming children’s lives.
With a TassaTag you will be a part of the ECPAT-USA project and a visible voice working in solidarity with others to raise awareness of this major illegal trade.
TassaTags are produced at the Regina Self-Help Center in Nongkhai, Thailand, which provides education and income generating skills and opportunities for women. The center enables women to stay in their villages and keep their children in school, which are two major strategies in reducing sex trafficking. The Regina Center is one of the producing partners of HandCrafting Justice. HandCrafting Justice is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
You can also buy the Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream. The Body Shop will donate a portion of each purchase to ECPAT.
ECPAT-USA also has a volunteer program open to anyone with conviction and a desire to end child sex trafficking. We particularly need volunteers with professional skills, and we will post opportunities on our idealist organization page which can be found by clicking here.
